Chapter Six

In the afternoon, June managed to escape the house and visit Chamberlain’s by claiming a need to go shopping, since no one had been to the grocery store in over a week. And she thought she and Cameron were going to get tired of leftovers soon. She needed to talk to Eleanor. She had wanted to corner the woman at the funeral and ask some pretty damn pointed questions, but how could she, with so many witnesses around?

But Eleanor wasn’t there. Instead, the front desk was occupied by her cousin.

“Hey, there, June.” Hilda barely lifted her eyes from her book. Then she did a double take. “Damn. You look different today. What is it?” She leaned forward, displaying a disturbing amount of cleavage. “Did you change your hair? Get a manicure? No. Wait. I know!” She clapped her hands with a grin. “Fuck me sideways! You went and got yourself a brand-new body!”

“Hello, Hilda.” June gritted her teeth. “Is Eleanor here?”

“Home with the kids. Littlest one is teething. Rotten little monster. If he wasn’t a boy, I’d tell Ellie to strangle him. Can I help you with something?”

June looked around, but the store was empty. “Do you ever get actual customers in here?”

Hilda smirked. “A few. Why?”

“Never mind. Did Eleanor…did she tell you what she did? With me?”

Hilda nodded, all signs of malicious amusement wiped away. “Yeah. Mom nearly had a fit. I’m not saying it’s black magic, but it’s definitely gray.” She shrugged. “But it seems the Goddess didn’t mind. Because here you are.”

“I need advice.”

“Okay.”

“I don’t think…do you think Eleanor thought about the consequences? Personal consequences?”

“Oh.” Hilda blinked. “Oh, fuck. Donna was your sister-in-law. And that means…”

June fell into a chair. “Yeah.”

“Damn.” Hilda licked her lips. “That is so hot.”

“What?”

“Yeah.” The younger woman…wait. Hilda was probably older than Donna. Hilda leaned back in her chair. Her nipples were popping erect, tenting the thin cloth of her t-shirt. “Damn me. Hilda swiped her hand impatiently. “Because of ritual magic and the stupid fact that there weren’t any damn male witches in this part of the fucking country. Witches of our bloodline, male and female alike, need a mate to harness our full power. John was the only male we knew about that had anything close to the necessary strength. So we fucked him. Me and my sister and his sisters and my mom and his mom. And then Steven showed up, which made things easier for all of us.
